Professor Dr. med. Dr. rer. nat. Gunther O. Hofmann (*22.05.1957 in Landshut/ Bavaria) is a german surgeon, physicist and university teacher.

Education and Career

Prof. Dr. Dr. Gunther O. Hofmann was born in 1957 in Landshut, Bavaria, Germany. After his Medical education, his Staatsexamen and his doctorate (Dr. med.) 1982 at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich he moved to the Technical University Munich. In 1984 there he graduated in physics and obtained his Dr. rer. nat. (Doctor rerum naturalium, literally "Doctor of the things of nature") 1987.

1987 Hofmann started to work as Research fellow at the Klinikum of the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich until his Habilitation in 1992. Then followed a research stay at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, United States and he started to work in the surgical hospital and clinic of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München in the same year (1992). In 1995 he moved to the Berufsgenossenschaftliche Unfallklinik (BG Trauma Hospital) Murnau.

Since 2004 Prof. Dr. Dr. Gunther O. Hofmann Medical Director of Berufsgenossenschaftliche Kliniken Bergmannstrost Halle, Saxony-Anhalt and Director of Hospital for Trauma-, Hand- and Reconstructive Surgery, Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, Thuringia.

Research

His major research fields are Development of implants for osteosynthesis and joint replacement, bone and joint grafting, biomaterials, biomechanics, computer-assisted surgery, infections of bones
